Drug Treatment Facilities – Addiction Treatment Centre

Drug treatment centers in South Africa are becoming more widespread as the continuing battle with significant drug abuse continues. For many addicts, admission into a drug rehabilitation centre is the foundation they need to enable them to break through their first few months of abstinence in a safe and supportive environment, away from the regular routine of their using.

However, rehabilitation is not an escape from life and the problems associated with it, although in the first few months of recovery it can be immensely beneficial for an addict in treatment to focus only on themselves and not face distractions caused by problems in their everyday life.

Addiction is a disease which is incurable and progressive; over time it will get worse and can be fatal. The disease can be arrested with abstinence, proper counselling and a programme of recovery. Daily vigilance and working a programme of recovery will allow a sufferer to rebuild a life for themselves and become a functioning member of society. However, for an addict to evolve from a state of hardened drug use and absolute self destruction to being an abstinent, reliable and happy individual is not a change which occurs in a few days. The abstinence will need to be immediate, but the real problems which require attention are the deeply rooted psychological problems all addicts have.

Giving up is hard to do
There is a common saying, “an addict without drugs is like a fish out of water,” and in many aspects this statement is true. An addict is reliant on drugs, hence addiction has earned the nickname “habit”.

An addict will find drugs enmeshed in all aspects of their life and giving up something that has been the focus of their life for a long time is a shock. After years of numbing and avoiding feelings, they will suddenly have to cope with their problems without drugs and feel the emotions they have spent years avoiding.

The lifestyle associated with drug use is engrained into the addict. Associations, hang outs, dealers, image; all of these are part of an addict’s using and when drugs are removed from the life of an addict, they will still find themselves entwined in evidence of addiction, except they will not be high.

Why a treatment centre can help
In a treatment centre, addicts will still have to face life head on, but will be able to do so in a clean environment with trained professionals helping them to deal with the difficulties of beginning on road to recovery.

As mentioned previously, the problem is not the drugs, the addict’s associations, the places they frequented or the music they listened to: the problem is within the addict themselves. Being in a safe and supportive environment will make the transition into a clean life a little easier to manage.

After an addict has become abstinent, it is completely normal for them to crave drugs. Just as drug use is a symptom that something within the addict is wrong, cravings are a symptom too. Many addicts with years of recovery behind them find that when something such as feeling an uncomfortable emotion occurs, they may crave, but they are aware that it is merely a symptom that something is uncomfortable within themselves. When an addict is in the clutches of an addiction, they may want to stop but just cannot get through a day without using, similar to an addict who has just become abstinent and craves.

What to expect from a treatment centre
Every addiction treatment centre is different, depending on the psychological model of addiction treatment they follow.

Many centers provide only counselling and therapy without placing too much emphasis on the patient managing life on the ‘outside’ of their centre. Others use religion or labour as a treatment method. The most successful rate of recovery is definitely seen in addicts attending treatment centers which provide therapeutic counselling, a Twelve Step recovery programme and endorse a healthy lifestyle.

Counselling coupled with a Twelve Step programme is so successful because the counselling helps the addict deal with the past and present issues they face. A Twelve Step programme provides a way for them to remain abstinent once they have left their treatment centre as the members of a Twelve Step fellowship apply themselves daily to the principles and suggestions of the programme, keeping them motivated and able to cope with life as it happens.

The length of a patient’s stay can also help prepare them for life outside their treatment centre. Many addicts only complete a short term in a primary care facility. Such a facility usually treats patients for three to four weeks using an intensive therapy programme where the addicts are required to be in-patients and abide by strict rules. Once many leave the centre, the shock of returning to normal life can often be so great that they return to using straight away.

Addicts who attend a programme at a secondary and tertiary care facility after their primary treatment seem to have a higher rate of recovery than those who simply attend a month long course. Secondary and tertiary care facilities allow patients a little more freedom and are able to help addicts become accustomed to living life without drugs and become immersed into society once more, but in a safe and controlled environment.

Drug treatment facilities can be an incredible help for an addict beginning the process of turning their lives into a happy existence that is not dependent on drug use. Attending a treatment centre offering therapy and counselling from trained professionals on a one-to-one and group basis coupled with a Twelve Step programme and a healthy lifestyle is the best chance for an addict to create a firm foundation of recovery.
Oasis Counselling Centre is a drug treatment centre in Plettenberg Bay that offers therapy by professionally trained counselors. The Oasis Centre also endorses a Twelve Step programme of recovery and a healthy lifestyle.

Can Teen Drug Abuse Be Related To Teen Suicide?

After spending numerous amount of years with teenagers I can’t remember a time when there has not been at least one teen who has flirted with the idea of suicide. It seems there is always a teen struggling with suicide and even the extremes of cutting themselves or some sort of self mutilation.

Because of this I decided to take a look at how drug addiction can lead to teen suicide.

Something that we don’t think of is the connection between teen drug abuse and suicide. There are some studies that would suggest that teens who use drugs regularly are more likely to consider suicide as well as to act upon their thoughts. According to the American Psychiatric Association, many teens suffer from depression.

When a teen is living in this world of depression it is not unlikely that they would find a means of “self-medicate” with drugs in order to avoid exposing themselves to their friends or adults. As we know through years of dealing with teens and their drug abuse that the use of drugs does not alleviate the problems, but instead, usually aggravate them, leaving the teen with a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. This places them at greater risk for suicide attempts.

From my own personal experience and watching the decisions that teens make while they are abusing drugs, we see that the use of drugs will cloud their judgment, and lower their natural survival instinct. Drug use affects the chemical balance of the brain, intensifying feelings of sadness, depression and loneliness. In an article I wrote on teen withdrawal we can see just having to deal with the withdrawal from the drug, and intense feelings of crashing profoundly affect the young person’s mind and mood. While these factors exist in adult addicts, they are more intensified in the young adult and teen, particularly due to his dependency upon adults.

Something we do not understand nor think of when it comes to the progression of usage of drugs among teenagers is that they have a readily supply of tools that could either help them commit suicide or even lead to an untimely death. Overdosing is one of the easiest and most common methods of suicide.

Did you know that suicide is the third leading cause of death amongst young people from the ages of fifteen to twenty-four.

The one thing we are noticing is that teens, especially today, are under a tremendous amount of pressure. Caught in the crossroads between childhood and adulthood, teens are filled with conflicts about themselves, their identity, and their place in the world. It is not uncommon for teens today battle between peer pressure and performance placed upon them from society and even at times parents to perform and do so perfectly all the time.

These factors, coupled with their perception that the adult world doesn’t or can’t, understand their angst, leave them vulnerable and isolated. These factors contribute to both addiction and suicidal intention, both of which also feed on the other.

I have been told that some of the methods for treating a teen with suicidal intentions are very similar to treating teens with addictions. Some have said that most of the root causes are quite similar. The most important thing for an adult to provide the teen, is an avenue of communication. I have an article “8 tips to get your teen hearing you again” that will help you communicate with your teen.

Something that we know to be true is that communication between a teen and their parents is vital to any type of recovery. Teens need to feel as though they have someone they can turn too and express their feelings and problems. He or she need to feel that they are not isolated. There are people who care about them. They are not the only one who is struggling with these problems. This of course is only the first step. If a teen is suicidal they need to receive professional guidance.

Here are some suicide facts you should be aware of:

A teen that has lost a friend to suicide is at higher risk for depression, delinquency and drug abuse. (Estimates by the American Association of Suicidology place this risk at three times that of the average teen.)
Studies reveal that a family member of a loved one who has committed suicide is at up to 5 times the risk for suicide themselves.
Suicide facts indicate that thousands of children and adolescents are affected by a suicide each year.
Emotional distress of child survivors of suicide may go unnoticed if they do not have a chance to share their pain.
We can all help in suicide prevention by learning about statistics, suicide rates and teen suicide.
There is no timetable for recovery, suicide survivors are forever changed by the tragedy.

Addiction: Effective Treatment Methods

Addiction to drug and alcohol cannot be cured, but there are many methods of effective treatment available today, some of which did not exist a few years ago. Doctors have learned a great deal about addiction in the past few decades, especially what works and what doesn’t. It should be noted that there is a difference between chemical dependency, which is a physical symptom caused by the drug itself, and addiction, which is a genetic, compulsive disorder. These things may, and often do, coexist with one another.

Most people are familiar by now with 12 step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, but that is not the only choice available. The 12 steps don’t work for everyone, at least not as a stand alone method.

Other options for the treatment of drug and alcohol addictions include medications such as methadone, suboxone, and oral naltrexone. Methadone has been in use for some time for narcotic opiate addicts, however, due to government restrictions, it is difficult for many addicts to receive treatment, and the medication must be doled out daily, requiring addicts to visit a clinic every day.

Suboxone comes in a tablet form and is used to treat severe opiate addiction. It contains a drug similar to morphine or heroin, but does not generate the same “high” and reduces cravings for opiates. It also contains a drug which, if injected or otherwise not used as directed, will counteract all effects of the first drug, and cause withdrawal and negative side effects. This means that although it can cause drug dependence, there is a smaller likelihood of abuse by an addict taking it unmonitored. It is for use during  initial detox and can be continued afterward as a maintenance medication.

For alcoholics, a drug called Campral – used for quite some time in Europe, but only recently available in the United States – is a drug that blocks the brain from receiving the enjoyable aspects of alcohol, which stops the cravings associated with drinking. Other medications have been used against alcoholism, but they work much differently, in part by creating more negative side effects.. Some suggest that this drug may also be useful against other addictions, such as addiction to stimulants. Campral does not block withdrawal from alcohol and may not be helpful to someone who has not already stopped drinking.

Naltrexone is a medication which eliminates the patient feeling any of the effects of narcotics, which helps to guard against relapse. Because it must be taken daily to remain effective, it is suggested that having a patient take it while observed by a medical professional is best, so use of the Vivitrol Extended-Release Injectable Suspension form is preferred when daily monitoring is not possible or convenient.

Nalterxone can be used as a maintenance measure, when a doctor feels a patient should stop taking Suboxone, but is also often used for rapid detoxification. Like Campral, Naltrexone is currently only approved for alcoholism, but doctors have found benefit when used for other types of addiction.

Hope for Crystal Meth Treatment

The effects of crystal meth addiction can be visible to the naked eye and can be devastating to the addict and their family.  Crystal meth can cause drying of the skin and gums so that the teeth decay and the face becomes scarred from scratching.  Only crystal meth treatment can reverse some of these effects and return the addict to a normal state.  The problem is difficult because meth addiction is difficult to beat.  It requires crystal meth treatment that is both compassionate and knowledgeable about the specific problems that lead to crystal meth addiction.

Crystal meth addiction can lead to many emotional effects.  The person can be irresponsible and can stop caring properly for their children.  The addict may turn to crime in order to pay for their addiction.  A single puff of crystal meth can result in a high that lasts up to 24 hours, unlike heroin or cocaine, which last for only a few hours.  Such long “high” periods can lead to paranoid schizophrenia, violence or suicidal beliefs and tendencies.  Only crystal meth treatment can reverse these emotional problems, along with personal and group therapy to deal with the underlying aspects of having the addiction in the first place.

Family support is really important in crystal meth treatment.  While the person is safely stowed away at a treatment facility, you can make use of family therapy offered at many of these facilities in order to let the person know what the impact of crystal meth use has had on the entire family.  Spouses, children, parents and close friends can partake in this type of therapy and it can strengthen family bonds for when the addict is released from the facility.

If you know someone in your family or close circle of friends who is addicted to crystal meth, you need to begin the process by contacting a qualified drug recovery clinic, hopefully one that is specific to treating crystal meth addictions.  It is the facility’s responsibility to detoxify the person and to begin their recovery from the emotional devastation that results from meth addiction.  The crystal meth treatment they get at a good clinic has a good chance of working if there is strong family support and if the treatment can really get to the underlying issues.

The treatment of meth addiction is more difficult than other drugs because the withdrawal and cravings can last for several months, leading to relapse.  This means that crystal meth treatment must last longer and be more aware of this chance for relapse so that the person doesn’t get discharged too early back into the life that led them to meth addiction.  There is hope for crystal meth addiction but it takes a special touch from a qualified facility that understands the habit and can help the person overcome it as easily as possible.

My Guide to Drug Rehabilitation

By the time the record was released, Tyler and Perry had exited drug rehabilitation. The difference: When patients are admitted to a drug rehabilitation facility they are secluded from all the surrounding triggers and hence can stay clean with no effort. Government sponsors the use of acupuncture in drug rehabilitation programs.

This was their biggest fallout and her husband found himself in a drug rehabilitation center a couple months after the birth of his second son. The list includes residential centers, outpatient treatment facilities and hospitals with inpatient programs for drug rehabilitation. Therefore, I went to a drug rehabilitation center.

Consulting a physician or healthcare professional with experience in drug rehabilitation is a necessary step. In today’s drug rehabilitation centers, the 12 steps are at the core of their treatment programs. Only then will he react positively to the drug rehabilitation or recovery programs.

The specialized doctors in drug rehabilitation sustain that, during these multiple episodes of treatments and in between, patients should be constantly supported and encouraged by close family members and friends, in order to avoid relapses and to assure the safe and healthy reintegration in the society. But that is not what made the club drug rehabilitation priceless. Substance abuse rehabilitation drug testing can be done in treatment centers and rehabilitation centers.

My first job as a counselor was at a drug rehabilitation center called One Day at a Time. It will aid in deciding on the appropriate drug rehabilitation program that you will benefit the most from. Drug rehabilitation can be an arduous process, and you or your loved one deserves the best possible help available to help you navigate this difficult time with success.

Christian drug rehabilitation proves to be highly effective because the alcoholic is able to feel a higher power and the whole community, helping him to overcome the destructive addiction. Keep in mind that drug rehabilitation treatment programs should include a continuing care program that supports and monitors recovery. He re-entered a veteran’s hospital drug rehabilitation program, started attending church, and surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.

In 2002 over a quarter million individuals entering a drug rehabilitation program reported marijuana as their primary drug of abuse. These can include anything from drug rehabilitation to nursing homes to prescriptions to ambulance service.

Government sponsors the use of acupuncture in drug rehabilitation programs. For those who wish to get help with their drug addiction, there is several drug rehabilitation and treatments centers scattered throughout the country. Abused children, minority education, battered women, drug rehabilitation, food banks, homeless or lost children, seeing-eye dogs, free clinics, organ donors, habitat, teen runaways – there are numerous tragedies to choose from.

Drug test kits put your mind at rest and allow you to either put the question of whether or not drug use is occurring in your house behind you or take the next step in getting your teen drug rehabilitation, prisons, funny farm or drug rehabilitation facilities. Because of that reason, the number of programs for drug rehabilitation keeps on rising year on year.

There are many reasons why a person would need to attend a drug rehabilitation program. Since there are several different types of drug rehabilitation programs available ranging from inpatient, outpatient, residential, short-term, and long-term, it helps to learn what s out there and how to choose one. So clearly, finding the right alcohol rehab program or drug rehabilitation center can make all the difference.

Holistic Healing Centers can Change your Life

Holistic health is a popular medical philosophy that treats patients by focusing on the most essential physical aspects—taking emotional, spiritual, and physical health into account. For many years, pharmaceutical medications have dominated the world of western medicine. But synthetic medication always carries the risk of creating dangerous chemical reactions in the body. Holistic healing is a lifelong commitment to personal health and well being on the way to living a better life.

Holistic healing goes beyond the mind-body connection to achieve improved lifestyle and wellness. Your entire personal well-being is accounted for. Physical healing, mental health, wellness, emotional well-being and spiritual values are the areas in which holistic health centers focus. This method of treatment will help you find personal power to establish control over your mind and body.

A person who gets the treatment from a holistic health center also learns the value of having proper relationships, being part of a nurturing caring environment, and the importance of having compassion for all human beings.

There are various types of holistic healing therapies that you can receive from a healing center. Some of the most popular and widely used holistic healing therapies are:

Aromatherapy: This is a massage treatment of body, face, and scalp to improve blood circulation through the use of aromatic essential oils made from trees, flowers, and plants. This treatment provides relaxation through the use of acupressure.

Ayurveda medicine: This is an ancient healing system that uses combinations of herbs. It was developed over thousands of years in India.

Counseling: If you are going through a bad phase of life, it is essential that you need to overcome your depression. Expert psychologists will help you to overcome depression by counseling.

Herbal remedies: This is a traditional healing treatment based on the use of plants and plant extracts. Since pharmaceutical medicines are affecting our body badly, it is better to use the natural medicines to cure our diseases.

Homeopathy: This is a treatment based on a theory that many diseases can be cured by a very small amount of drugs.

Naturopathic medicine: This treatment heals through massage, exercise, acupuncture, and minor surgery.

Chinese medicine: Another type of treatment in holistic healing centers that includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, heat therapy, and nutritional and lifestyle counseling that treat a range of acute and chronic diseases.

What is Opioid Addiction?

To first understand opioid addiction, you must first understand what opioids are. The term opioid refers to any drug or chemical that attaches (like a key fits into a lock) to sites in the brain called opioid receptors. The human body makes its own opioids (called endorphins) but the opioids we are concerned with when we talk about opioid addiction are those that are manufactured in a laboratory or made by plants. For instance, morphine and codeine are found in the extract (the opium) of seeds from the poppy plant, and this opium is processed into heroin. Most prescription painkillers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone are synthesized in the laboratory. When a person becomes dependent upon these drugs, they need opioid addiction treatment.

What are Common Types of Opioids?

Opioids may be prescribed legally by doctors (for pain, cough suppression or opioid dependence) or they may be taken illegally for their mood-altering effects–euphoria, sedation, “to feel better”, or for some, opioids are taken “just to feel normal”. Not everyone who takes an opioid is at risk for dependence requiring opioid addiction treatment, but these drugs are commonly abused.

Examples of prescribed medications that sometimes lead to opioid addiction, but that can also help patients battle other types of substance abuse include:

Codeine–the opioid in Tylenol #3, Fiorinal or Fiorecet #3, and in some cough syrups.
Hydrocodone–the opioid in Vicodin, Lortab, and Lorcet.
Oxycodone–the opioid in Percodan, Percocet and OxyContin.
Hydromorphone–the opioid in Dilaudid.
Oxymorphone–the opioid in Opana.
Meperidine–the opioid in Demerol.
Morphine–the opioid in MS Contin, Kadian and MSIR.
Fentanyl–the opioid in Duragesic.
Tramadol–the opioid in Ultram.
Methadone–the opioid in Dolophine.
Buprenorphine–the opioid in Suboxone.

Although not entirely accurate, the terms opiate and narcotic are generally used interchangeably with the term opioid.

The great majority of illicitly used prescription opioids are not obtained from drug dealers. Family and friends are now the greatest source of illicit prescription opioids, and the majority of these opioids are obtained from one physician–not from “doctor shopping”. More than 90% of the world’s opium and heroin supply comes from Afghanistan and Southeast Asia. ‘Black tar’ heroin comes primarily from Mexico. Opioids are the most powerful known pain relievers, sometimes leading to opioid addiction requiring treatment. The use and abuse of opioids dates back to antiquity. The pain relieving and euphoric effects of opioids were known to Sumerians (4000 B.C.) and Egyptians (2000 B.C.).

What Happens When an Opioid is Taken?

When an opioid is taken into the body by any route (by mouth, nasally, smoking or injecting) it enters the blood stream and travels to the brain. When it attaches to an opioid receptor in the brain, our perception of pain is reduced (if we have pain) and we feel sedated. Most people also feel at least a mild pleasurable sensation, or a sense of well-being when opioid receptors are stimulated. Some report feeling more energized or motivated after taking opioids. A few experience unpleasant side effects such as nausea, vomiting or irritability. Unfortunately, those who are prone to develop an opioid addiction seem to experience an intense euphoric or pleasurable feeling when they take an opioid – leading to prolonged dependence requiring opioid addiction treatment.

An opioid seems to do something for their mood that it does not do for most people. Their experience with an opioid is quite different than it is for the person who is not prone to develop an opioid addiction. Drugs of abuse (like opioids, cocaine and alcohol) are addictive for the susceptible person because repeated use of those substances–in an effort to reproduce that intense euphoric feeling–results in long-term changes in the structure and the function of the brain. These changes in the brain start to drive their behavior, and when someone is suffering from opioid addiction, they want the drug even when the drug no longer provides pleasure.

Opioids that can be snorted, inhaled or injected reach the brain in a high concentration rapidly and result in an even more intense high, or a “rush”. As a result, drugs that can be abused by these routes are often more appealing to the person seeking euphoria, and are therefore more addictive for the susceptible person.

What is Opioid Dependence? Is it the Same as Opioid Addiction?

Yes – opioid dependence and opioid addiction mean the same thing. Opioid dependence is a disease affecting the brain that involves both a physical and a psychological need for an opioid, and requires opioid addiction treatment. An individual is considered “dependent” or “addicted” when he or she exhibits this behavior–compulsive use despite obvious harm. The addicted person can’t seem to stop using opioids even when it is obvious to himself or herself and others that he or she should stop. The two major signs of opioid addiction are cravings–an intense and overwhelming desire for a drug–and a loss of control–it becomes harder and harder to say no to using a drug, or controlling the amount used, and thus use becomes compulsive. Behaviors which signal a need for opioid addiction treatment include:

Denial that a problem exists, or minimizing the severity of the problem.
Impaired control over use–using more than planned.
A lot of time is spent obtaining, using or recovering from using opioids.
Important obligations like school, work, or childcare are reduced for the sake of use.
Multiple prior unsuccessful attempts to quit, or a persistent desire to quit.
Continued use despite obvious harm to one’s health, job, finances or family.

What is Physical Dependence?

A person is said to have “physical dependence” on opioids if they have high “tolerance”, meaning more of the substance is needed to get the same effect, and they get withdrawal symptoms if the substance is stopped. Most patients who seek opioid addiction treatment also have some degree of physical dependence. However, physical dependence alone is not sufficient to make a diagnosis of addiction. A person can be physically dependent–such as a cancer patient might be who is prescribed opioids for severe pain–and not be addicted. Again, addiction refers to certain behaviors.

Patients who are being treated for chronic pain can develop what we call “pseudo addiction”. They may start to exhibit some of the same behaviors we see with addiction when they don’t get adequate pain relief. When their pain is controlled, the behaviors that we associate with opioid addiction disappear. They do not need opioid addiction treatment. They need better pain management.

5 Chronic Pain Issues in Drug Treatment Centers

When working with and helping addicts & alcoholics there are a variety of factors that come into consideration when deciding what approach is best for drug rehab.  One of the major factors is if a particular substance abuser is also dealing with co-occurring chronic pain it can be a complex and challenging process for clinicians, clients, and family.  It can cause frustration and prolong the suffering of the client. All complaints of pain must be taken serious and have proper evaluation. Pain can impair health, function, and quality of life. Here are some key points.

According to The American Society of Pain Management Nurses (ASPMN) position is that individuals with addictive disease and pain have the right to be treated with dignity, respect, and the same quality of pain assessment and management as all other individuals. (ASPMN Position statement on pain management in patients with addictive disease)
Research in addiction medicine reveals a strong association between stress and drug craving. The stress of unrelieved pain may contribute to relapse in the recovering client or increased drug use in patient who is actively using.
Persons with substance abuse disorders are less likely than others to receive effective pain treatment
Treatment of chronic pain at a drug treatment center should use a multidimensional approach including but not limited to, Cognitive Behavior therapy, ice, heat, stretching and exercise, TENS, and nonopioid analgesic medications like acetaminophen, NSAIDs, tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsants.
As a last resort the use of opioid medications, preferably long acting time release.

What are the various drug rehab Methods

Drug rehab Behavioral therapies can include counseling, psychotherapy, support groups, or family therapy. Treatment medications offer help in suppressing the withdrawal syndrome and drug craving and in blocking the effects of drugs. In addition, studies show that treatment for heroin addiction using methadone at an adequate dosage level combined with behavioral therapy reduces death rates and many health problems associated with heroin abuse.

In general, the more Drug rehab treatment given, the better the results. Many patients require other services as well, such as medical and mental health services and HIV prevention services. Patients who stay in treatment longer than 3 months usually have better outcomes than those who stay less time. Patients who go through medically assisted withdrawal to minimize discomfort but do not receive any further treatment, perform about the same in terms of their drug use as those who were never treated. Over the last 25 years, studies have shown that treatment works to reduce drug intake and crimes committed by drug-dependent people. Researchers also have found that drug abusers who have been through treatment are more likely to have jobs.

Types of Treatment Programs

The ultimate goal of all drug abuse treatment is to enable the patient to achieve lasting abstinence, but the immediate goals are to reduce drug use, improve the patient’s ability to function, and minimize the medical and social complications of drug abuse.

There are several types of drug abuse treatment programs. Short-term methods last less than 6 months and include residential therapy, medication therapy, and drug-free outpatient therapy. Longer term treatment may include, for example, methadone maintenance outpatient treatment for opiate addicts and residential therapeutic community treatment.

In maintenance treatment for heroin addicts, people in treatment are given an oral dose of a synthetic opiate, usually methadone hydrochloride or levo-alpha-acetyl methadol (LAAM), administered at a dosage sufficient to block the effects of heroin and yield a stable, noneuphoric state free from physiological craving for opiates. In this stable state, the patient is able to disengage from drug-seeking and related criminal behavior and, with appropriate counseling and social services, become a productive member of his or her community.

California Drug Rehab Centers, Washington Drug Rehabs Present High Success Rates

With an ever-increasing number of drug treatment centers cropping up all over the nation, it can be a daunting task to determine which programs have the highest success rates.  There are several California drug rehab centers that have been able to establish an impressive success rate at providing individuals suffering from drug and alcohol addiction with a permanent solution.  Likewise, there are also several Washington drug rehab treatment centers that also provide exceptional care and long-term success.

In many ways, it is important to find out how the various treatment centers compare based on permanent solutions.  As a result, it is important to pay attention about how a particular drug rehab Washington or California measures success.  Clearly, it is important that an individual seeking drug and alcohol addiction treatment graduate the program.  However, it is far more beneficial to find out how many of the graduates of California drug rehab centers for example have been able to remain sober.

The most important measurement is arguably the numbers of individuals that make it through the program that remain permanently drug and alcohol free.  The great success of Washington drug rehab programs as well as those in California is really quite amazing in comparison with other treatment center programs.

It is important to consider how devastating drug and alcohol addiction can be for individuals, friends, families, and loved ones.  As a result of the success of California drug rehab centers, more and more individuals are arriving at a life-long solution to drug and alcohol dependency.  It is of considerable value to be able to enter into one of the inpatient California drug rehab centers and become successfully discharged with an incredible probability that the individual will be able to live drug free.  This is especially true with the large number of individuals that check into and out of various drug rehab centers only to check into and out of another one in a continual cycle of ineffectuality.

The Washington drug rehab programs and those in California are some of the strongest programs in the country.  In a concerted effort for successful drug rehab Washington has put together several programs that use holistic methodologies and somewhat nontraditional programs that are achieving great success.  There are over 300,000 people in the state of Washington that use marijuana, which is over half of the entire population of the state.

With the increase in demand for Washington and California drug rehab centers, many nontraditional treatment centers are finding incredible success over traditional methods.  The professionals at DrugRehab.net are dedicated to helping people find the right drug rehab center with the highest rates of success.

DrugRehab.net has partnered with thousands of drug treatment centers across the United States.

What Are The Steps In A Drug Intervention/alcohol Intervention

An intervention is not an event–it is a process.  Done properly, a drug intervention or alcohol intervention is carefully planned and executed to maximize its effectiveness.  At Dallas Intervention, we follow the widely-accepted “Johnson Model” of intervention pioneered by Vernon E. Johnson. The Johnson Model is premised on the idea that the most effective intervention approach is to gather concerned relatives and friends of the alcoholic/addict and present him or her with reality in a compassionate and receivable way.

In preparation for an intervention, each intervention client should, at a minimum, expect an initial assessment of the need for intervention and the effects alcohol/drugs is having on all concerned, a planning meeting in which the intereventionist provides ducation regarding chemical dependency, a discussion of intervention protocol, and guidance for preparing intervention letters, a rehearsal of the intervention, and a post-intervention process meeting.  In all cases, the interventionist should assist the client in determining and choosing the proper treatment option for the alcoholic or addict.

How do I know if my loved one is an alcoholic or addict?  While we recommend professional assistance in determining whether or not someone is chemically dependent, the following questions may help you decide if further assessment is needed:

Have you ever tried to control how much or how often you drink/use and failed?
Do you find yourself unable to stop drinking/using even though it is causing negative consequences?
Do you feel that you don’t want anyone to know about your drinking/using?
Do you drink/use for the sole purpose of getting high?
Do you drink/use in the morning, at or before work, or at other inappropriate times or in other inappropriate places?
Do you make promises to yourself concerning your drinking/using on which you cannot follow through?
Do you believe that drinking/using makes your life bearable?
Do you feel desperation or uneasiness when you cannot drink/use?
Do you lose count of the number drinks you’ve had or pills you’ve taken?
Do you drink/use regardless of the consequences?
Have you ever threatened your financial stability or standing in the community by your drinking/using?
Have you ever had a serious relationship threatened or destroyed because of drinking/using?
Do you feel that life would be miserable without drinking/using?
Do you find yourself drinking/using without intending to?
Does your drinking/using affect your reputation?
Do you drink/use to try to deal with or escape from life’s problems?
Are you unable to concentrate on other areas of your life because of a preoccupation with drinking/using?
Do you spend a lot of time seeking out your drink/drug?
Do you find yourself obsessing about drinking/using?
Have you ever wished you could stop or control your drinking/using but could not?
Do you feel out of control?
Neglect responsibilities due to drinking/using?
Hide alcohol/drugs?
Undergo a personality change when drinking/using?
Lie about the amount or frequency of drinking/using?
Drive under the influence?
Drink/use alone?
Had memory loss from drinking/using?
Have medical problems caused by drinking/using?
Have legal problems caused by drinking/using?
Neglect work or school because of drinking/using?
Isolate from family and friends?

Understanding Drug Detox

Drug detox and alcohol detox programs are where the addiction recovery process begins. Drug and alcohol abuse can create profound changes in your brain and body chemistry. That’s why one of the first steps in the drug and alcohol addiction treatment process is to detoxify from these toxic chemicals and their byproducts. There are several types of drug and alcohol detox programs available such as outpatient detox programs and ultra rapid detox programs, but the detox programs that have proven to be the safest and most effective are referred to as “medically based inpatient detox programs”.

Stopping alcohol or drug use “cold turkey” can be dangerous and, in some cases, life threatening. One of the goals of inpatient drug detox or alcohol detox programs is to minimize or manage the symptoms associated with withdrawal. Inpatient alcohol and drug detox centers are prepared to handle these problems as well as dispense safe detox medications at a moment’s notice. It is no longer necessary for a person to suffer while going through any kind of alcohol or drug withdrawal.

Detoxification should cover all aspects of the individual’s withdrawal and purification from drugs. The removal of drug residuals is a key goal in drug detox. Without this process, drug residues can remain in ones body and cause cravings for years after drug use has ceased. A vital step in a successful drug detox as well as drug rehabilitation is flushing out these accumulated toxic residues so that the individual no longer experiences unwanted adverse effects from the drugs they have taken.

It is important to understand that a drug detox or alcohol detox program is only the initial step in the recovery process. Alcohol and drug detox programs provide medical stabilization and should not be viewed as rehabilitation. Rehab programs look to maintain the gains made in detox, while working towards establishing a firm ground upon which future long-term recovery is to be built.

Statistics compiled after years of research have found that the vast majority of people that complete alcohol or drug detox, but fail to continue treatment in a residential addiction treatment center, end up in relapse. Detox is a vital component in the recovery process, but lasting recovery is generally achieved through multidisciplinary protocols that address the root of the addiction and not just its physical effects.

There is no one perfect drug detox or alcohol detox program for everyone. There are many things to consider when choosing a drug or alcohol detox and treatment program and without professional help, it can be a daunting task.

Signs and Symptoms of JWH018 (K2, Incensed Drug) Abuse

Reports of JWH018 and other incensed drug abuse cases are moderately low even though rampant selling of herbal smoke blends is evident in the market. This is mainly because lesser people are aware of the possible signs of abuse. Most weed users do not even complain any drug abuse effects from these kinds of substances. Thus, the suppose-to-be societal crisis becomes non-existent because nobody is paying attention to it.

Common Signs of JWH018 Abuse

Usually, those who abuse drugs or any substance do not admit that it causes a negative impact in their lives. If that is the case, it is vital for the surrounding families and friends to identify and understand the probable signs of abuse. Recognizing this following information about drug abuse helps in confronting the problem at hand.

1. Negligence of responsibilities whether in school, house or work due to drug use.
2. Occurrence of relationship problems with a partner, family members, employer, colleagues and even with friends.
3. Always running into legal troubles like robbery to sustain drug use, disorderly behavior and violence.
4. Noticeable demonstration of risk-taking behaviors such as driving when on drugs, unsafe sex and use of dirty paraphernalia.
5. Drug addiction or compulsively use of drugs despite the awareness of its dangers and risks.

JWH018 Addiction Symptoms

Although various substances give different kinds of effects, signs of addiction are all the same no matter what it is. Here are the usual addiction symptoms that manifests to during drug abuse.

1. Built up drug tolerance.
The user increases the dosage of drugs to experience the same effect when drug is taken in small amounts. Due to frequent use, the body’s response to drug decreases. As a result, taking large doses is inevitable to achieve the desired experience.

2. Drug dependence.
Through the course of time and increase in frequency of use, the body becomes dependent on the drug itself. Consequently, the user cannot function normally when there is no drug. Abruptly stopping the use of the drug may result to appearance of withdrawal symptoms. In the end, the user continues to abuse drugs to avoid the withdrawal syndrome.

3. Uncontrollable drug use.
Simply means, the user do drugs quite often even more than he has planned. He cannot stop himself due to the urge of wanting more.

4. Obsession towards incensed drugs (K2, Spice, etc).
The user tends to spend most of the time thinking about the drug, how to procure it, when to use it again, possible new ways to heighten the effects and such. It is more like the user’s life revolves around the drug only.

5. Lost of interest with usual favorite activities.
This means abandoning the usual hobbies, interests, sports and activities. The user tends to detach himself from the society and stays lock up in his room or in a place where he usually use the drug.

JWH018 (K2 and Incensed Drug) Abuse Effects

All types of drugs including herbal smoke blends have one thing in common; they alter the brain’s function in controlling emotions, judgment, motivation, memory and learning. The best indicative factor in determining if they abuse drugs such as JWH018 is the manifestation of withdrawal symptoms. Reported drug abuse effects include:
– Profuse sweating during the day and especially at night
– Internal restlessness
– Palpitations and increase blood pressure
– Insomnia
– Headache
– Diarrhea
– Nausea and vomiting
– Tremors and in rare cases seizures
– Anxiety and paranoia without reason
– Manic episodes (hyperactivity, agitation)
– Sudden emotional and personality changes
– Feeling of depression and desperation.

In reality, the most notable effect of drug abuse is actually denial. It is the most evident sign of abuse. The mind decreases its ability to rationalize due to the increase urge of using these herbal smoke blends. It maybe one of the main reasons why there are lesser reports of drug abuse cases. Users are not aware that they already addicted to it. The lack of awareness about drug abuse result to continues use of these legal incensed drugs.

Successful Crystal Meth Treatment

Crystal meth treatment is needed now more than ever before.  There is now a pandemic of crystal meth addicts in the US—up to 1.5 million addicts who are current crystal meth users.  It is a highly addictive drug and one that is most resistant to crystal meth treatment.  Steps need to be taken in the way crystal meth addiction is treated in order to curb the epidemic.  Legislation against the making of crystal meth and the possession of crystal meth has not done much to make improvement in the epidemic.  The access to crystal meth is just as high as ever and the number of crystal meth addicts is on the rise.

The biggest problem with crystal meth is that it is cheap and easily available to just about anyone.  This is not the case with things like heroin and cocaine—even crack cocaine isn’t as easily available.  Crystal meth, also called crank or ice, is a huge threat to those who are prone to drug addiction.  It can adversely affect both the body and the mind, meaning that crystal meth treatment still often leads to someone whose mind is damaged and whose body is ravaged by its use.

The three things that get in the way of crystal meth treatment are: the ease of use, its ability to boost energy in the addict, and the inexpensiveness of producing the drug.  Crystal Meth is also highly addictive, making treatment difficult.  The major component of crystal meth is pseudoephedrine or ephedrine, which is a legal substance, although its use has been restricted to a behind the pharmacy counter status.  Users are able to set up a home laboratory where they can “cook up” the substance, which forms hard rocks that are then smoked.  It’s easy to get hooked making crystal meth treatment is difficult to manage.  People feel an intense rush when they use crystal meth, which is often used as a party drug.  People also use it for weight loss because it diminishes their appetite.

Crystal Meth use can cause an individual to have a particular appearance.  The skin on the face and body is usually scratched up due to chronic itching.  The jaw collapses, causing a classic appearance.  Addicts scratch their skin because they believe they are suffering from “Meth Lice” resulting in numerous self inflicted wounds on the face.  This can improve after treatment, although there is ongoing scarring that can be permanent.  The teeth are usually rotten because of dried-out gums and the jaw collapses because of the grinding of teeth and drying out of the tissues.  Treatment for crystal meth can manage some of these conditions but not all.

Even casual users can get hooked on crystal meth.  Meth affects the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which increases cravings for the drug.  The cravings can last for a long time and can lead to a solid addiction, which oftentimes borders on an obsession for the drug.  Treatment must overcome the seriousness of crystal meth addiction.  Withdrawal effects can be serious and the ongoing urge to use the drug can persist, even after a long period of crystal meth treatment.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab – The Procedures Used in a Rehab Center

Co-existence of drug and alcohol rehab:

It is a usual phenomenon of the same center housing a drug and alcohol rehab programs together under the same roof. It is so because it has been observed that in many cases individuals who are under the influence of alcohol abuse also suffer from an incidence of drug addiction. An individual having dual-diagnoses of alcohol as well as substance abuse will require treatment for both the things. Although there are some similarities in the procedures of drug and alcohol rehab therapies, there are very prominent. One such difference is in the withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms for alcohol are almost the same no matter the dependency was actually on beer, hard liquor or wine. However withdrawal symptoms from drug addiction are different for the different kinds of drug abuse.

Various procedures to bring about non dependency on drugs and alcohol:

The procedures used to wean away people from alcohol or drugs depend mainly on the substance and its qualities on which the addicted person was dependent. The following is an example of the commonly used therapies at the drug and alcohol rehab centers.

Social Rehab Procedures: Narconon is a type of drug and rehab therapy that does not require the use of any drugs or medicines to solve the problems drug addiction. It uses nutrition as the base factor to bring about changes in the health conditions of the addicted individuals. This procedure can neither be labeled as psychiatric nor as medical. It is rather hailed as a social model of rehabilitating addicted individuals.

Medical Rehab Procedures: Most medical procedures include the usage of other medicines and at times anesthesia to help in the process of rapid detoxification from the dependence of morphine, cocaine, opium and heroin addictions. This process tries to calm the addicted persons by letting them sleep through the process of extreme detoxification. This procedure is carried out mainly in severely addicted individuals. This is carried out in those drug and alcohol rehab centers which has well qualified doctors, nurses and other staff at their disposal. The withdrawal and the whole treatment are carried out under medical supervision.

Spiritual Rehab Procedures: this procedure encompasses the use of a 12-step program, which involve taking help of the religious methods. Like in U.S.A the Christian religion is taken as a guideline and the addicts are given sermons from the Bible and asked to submit their will to the supreme power and surrender to Him. They pray to God to help them recover from their illness of addiction.

Holistic Drug Rehab Procedure: this procedure involves the increase on the three elements of body, mind and soul in order to achieve complete non dependency on drugs and alcohol. Meditation, yoga, listening to music and involving in any hobby form part of this procedure of drug and alcohol rehab.

Most rehabs carry out a combination of these above mentioned procedures. This ensures effectiveness of the rehab program. However practice of any one of the above will also ensure complete cure of the addicted individuals.

3 Ways for Alcohol Recovery, Including a Vision Board

Now that the holidays are over and life is returning to its normal routines, some of the population will be reflecting on the drinking pattern that occurred during those holiday parties and events. The side effects associated with drinking alcohol can go from the very moderate to the very extreme and there is only one person that can identify which one you are, and that person is you. Around recovery circles there is a famous saying: “If you think you have an alcohol problem, you probably do.”

But what does it mean to be alcoholic? Alcoholics Anonymous has a 12-question questionnaire and if you answer yes to any of the questions they suggest that you just may have an alcohol problem.  If you are concerned that you or a loved one may have a drinking problem contact your nearest AA Intergroup or go to the Alcoholics Anonymous website. Many times information is a golden key to moving ahead with getting recovery and/or to realize what you are doing and take steps to stop it before it gets out of control.

There are several signs of alcohol abuse, but in this day and age where drinking has become the norm when done in moderation, alcohol abuse has become a serious problem in our society. Alcohol recovery pertains to everyone in all walks of life, from the mailroom to the boardroom and it has no age barrier; you can be young or you can be elderly.

Alcohol recovery for the alcoholic is possible and it is important to know that alcohol abuse is a symptom of an underlying problem and it is good to know that getting an individual to stop drinking alcohol many times is the easy part of the recovery process. When a person is in alcohol recovery the most difficult part can sometimes be learning how to be happy once again, without the use of alcohol.

Using a Vision Map Video to remind the person in recovery daily of the joy and happiness that is available and can be found again, is a perfect tool in the recovering persons sober toolbox. Many people know about Vision Boards for mind mapping, but now there is Vision Map Videos and they are so much more private than a board for all of the family and friends to see. No matter how hopeless and unmanageable a person’s life has become due to the effects of alcohol, recovery is possible. The person in recovery needs as many tools as possible to over come the urges to drink again.

The use of counseling is a vital part of the process of recovery, an impartial supportive person to talk to that can point out the way to get past the drinking, the reasons for the drinking and assist them in the fact that alcohol is the problem. Even those who genuinely desire alcohol recovery and treatment are often incapable of seeking it in and of themselves and having a counselor to guide them is crucial.

You do not need to live your life with shame as most of the alcohol recovery programs have an anonymity structure to all of their meetings and groups; and more people are finding a solution for their alcohol problems and are so relieved to live a normal life again they couldn’t care less if anyone knew. The other thing that is great about the groups is that speaking directly with someone that has put alcohol behind them can give you the experience strength and hope that you can do it also.

Addiction Treatment Information

Ever really wonder why ten percent of the population needs addiction treatment of some sort or another? One would think with all of the research and development efforts expended more knowledge about the addictive qualities contained in drugs would be made available.  This is obviously not the case making the major problem to identify effective addiction treatment methods impossible due to the misleading information given about addiction, drugs and alcohol.

Addiction is a condition characterized by repeated, compulsive seeking and use of drugs, alcohol or other similar substances despite adverse social, mental and physical consequences. It is usually accompanied by psychological and physical dependence on the abused substance and the appearance of withdrawal symptoms when the addictive substance is rapidly decreased or terminated. When addiction exists, the drug use controls the individual rather than the individual controlling the usage.

In order to overcome dependence on drugs or alcohol, any substance really one must understand addiction and to do so would have to look at all the negative aspects caused by abusing substances. There are a series of physiological effects that take place within the brain and body that dramatically increase the desire to not only continue the abuse but also require more of the drug to produce the same effect. The first euphoric effects felt at the outset of drug or alcohol abuse are sought with a terrific effort.

First, drugs negatively influence the neurological balance of the brain setting off the release of neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and others causing the feeling of euphoria. This depletes the supply of naturally produces “feel good” chemicals in the brain and burns up tremendous amounts of nutrients, the fuel needed to produce more of these. Now with the neurotransmitter levels depleted and the inability of the body to produce more depression and anxiety set, otherwise known as coming down. This increases the desire to use more, and requires more of the drug to produce the same effect.

Second, drugs, any drugs are received by the body as toxins and are handled as such. All toxins are processed via the liver and kidneys, broken down into particles that are then disbursed back into the bloodstream. This design is supposed to allow the toxins to exit the body via the sweat gland or intestinal tract. Unfortunately these toxins are now fat bonding particles that can lodge in the fatty tissues of the body for undetermined length of time, as has been proven with the metabolites produced by marijuana.

These toxic particles are continually built up in the fat stores of the body causing continued nutritional deficiencies, making the addict feel worse and wanting more. This desire overrides any other thing in life, things that matter the most, like family, friends, job and quite often freedom and life. This culminates into feelings of hopelessness; guilt and inability of function in life or interact in a sane fashion.

Addiction treatment programs that reverse these toxic effects will produce improvement in the addicts overall disposition and offer. There are some rehabilitation programs that have greatly improved psychological test scores with nutritional therapy alone. Addiction treatment centers that start from the ground up by handling physical addiction and then mental emotional issues work far better than traditional treatment options.

Robert Otis is an addiction counselor experienced in the field of drug and alcohol addiction treatment and works to help educate people about the danger of substance abuse. He writes articles for Addiction Treatment Watch about effective drug rehabilitation and addiction treatment methods.
